International Day of Peace

Theme 2024: Promoting a Culture of Peace

internationaldaypeace

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Declaration and Programmed of Action on a Culture of Peace.

In this declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “is not simply the absence of conflict, but is a positive, dynamic, participatory process that fosters dialogue and the resolution of conflicts in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

In a world marked by rising geopolitical tensions and protracted conflicts, there has never been a better time to remember how the United Nations General Assembly came together in 1999 to define the values necessary for a culture of peace. These include respect for life, human rights and fundamental freedoms; promoting and strengthening a culture of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation; and commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. and adherence to the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations.

In follow-up resolutions, the General Assembly has further recognized the importance of choosing negotiation over confrontation and of working together and not against each other.

The Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is based on the idea that wars begin in the minds of men, and that it is therefore in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed. It is this notion that has served as the basis for the celebration of this year’s International Day of Peace. The ideas of peace, the culture of peace, must be cultivated in the minds of children and communities through formal and informal education, across countries and generations.

The International Day of Peace has always been an occasion to lay down arms and observe ceasefires. But it is also meant to encourage individuals to recognize the humanity of each other, because our survival as a global community depends on it.

Celebrating the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2024, offers numerous benefits for the Josammy Emporio Foundation:

  2. Building Partnerships: Building Partnerships: Engaging in this global event can help the foundation forge new partnerships with other organizations, governments, and communities committed to peace.
  3. Promoting Education: The day can be used to educate the public about the root causes of conflict and the importance of peace, fostering a culture of non-violence and mutual respect.
  4. Inspiring Action: By participating in the International Day of Peace, the foundation can inspire individuals and communities to take concrete actions towards peace, such as community service, dialogue initiatives, and educational programs.
  5. Enhancing Visibility: The global observance can significantly enhance the foundation’s visibility, attracting media coverage and public interest, which can lead to increased support and funding for its projects.
  6. Encouraging Reflection: It offers a moment for reflection on the progress made towards peace and the challenges that remain, helping to refine strategies and set new goals.
  7. Fostering Unity: Celebrating this day can bring together diverse groups and individuals, promoting unity and solidarity in the pursuit of a peaceful world.

By leveraging the International Day of Peace, the Josammy Emporio Foundation can amplify its impact and contribute meaningfully to the global peace movement.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly voted unanimously to designate the day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.

Harmony of Nations

In lands where the sun rises, and where it sets,
From deserts to forests, in cities and nets,
Cultures diverse, like colors in a weave,
Together in peace, we can achieve.

From the whispers of the East to the songs of the West,
In every heart, peace finds its nest.
In Africa’s dance, and Europe’s art,
In Asia’s wisdom, peace takes part.

Oceans may divide, but hearts unite,
In the spirit of peace, we find our light.
From the Americas’ plains to islands afar,
Peace is our guide, our shining star.

Let us embrace, with open hands,
The beauty of all, in every land.
For in our diversity, strength we find,
A world of peace, for all mankind.

On this day, let nations sing,
Of harmony, and the joy it brings.
Together we stand, in unity’s embrace,
A world of peace, a shared space.

Whispers Peace

In the heart of the forest, where the leaves softly sway,
Whispers of peace greet the dawn of the day.
Mountains stand tall, their peaks kissed by light,
Guardians of hope in the stillness of night.

Rivers flow gently, weaving tales of old,
Stories of unity, of courage untold.
The sky, vast and endless, a canvas so blue,
Reflects our dreams of a world made anew.

Birds sing a chorus, a melody of grace,
Echoing the call for a peaceful embrace.
Flowers bloom brightly, in colors so grand,
Symbols of love in every land.

Let us be like the trees, with roots deep and strong,
Standing together, where we all belong.
For in every heart, a seed can be sown,
A promise of peace, in actions shown.

On this day of peace, let nature remind,
That harmony and love are intertwined.
Together we rise, with a vision so clear,
A world united, with nothing to fear.

Seeds of Peace

In the forest’s heart, where whispers play,
Peace dawns with the light of day.
Mountain’s stand, rivers flow,
Nature’s call for peace to grow.

Birds sing, flowers bloom bright,
Symbols of love in morning light.
Together we stand, roots deep and strong,
In harmony, where we all belong.

On this day, let nature remind,
Peace and love are intertwined.
United we rise, with vision clear,
A world of peace, with nothing to fear.
