Brazzaville, 16 September 2024 – On the occasion of the commemoration of World Ozone Day, the Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, Arlette Soudan-Nonault, called for the urgent implementation of the Kigali Amendment. During the ceremony held in Brazzaville, she stressed the importance of phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and the need to develop an appropriate national strategy to achieve this goal.

World Ozone Day, celebrated every year on 16 September, highlights global efforts to protect this natural barrier that protects us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Minister Arlette Soudan-Nonault took the opportunity to recall the dangers posed by HFCs, powerful greenhouse gases widely used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

“Hydrofluorocarbons, while not a direct threat to the ozone layer, are very powerful greenhouse gases, with a global warming potential several thousand times higher than that of carbon dioxide,” said the Minister. She then highlighted the importance of the Kigali Amendment, an additional agreement to the Montreal Protocol, which aims to gradually reduce the production and consumption of these substances. Adopted in 2016 at the 28th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, the Kigali Amendment requires a phase-down of HFCs, with a final objective of their complete elimination by 2050. This initiative is crucial to combat global warming, as a significant reduction in HFCs could prevent a global temperature increase of 0.5°C by the end of the century.

Arlette Soudan-Nonault, as Technical Coordinator of the Congo Basin Climate Commission, stressed the need for Congo to respect its international commitments and implement an effective national strategy to support this transition. She recalled that the Congolese government, under the leadership of President Denis Sassou-N’Guesso, is firmly committed to the fight against climate change, particularly through the preservation of the Congo Basin forests, the second green lung of the planet after the Amazon.

The Minister also announced several practical measures to support the implementation of the Kigali Amendment in Congo. Among these initiatives, she mentioned the training of technicians in the refrigeration and air conditioning sectors in order to promote environmentally friendly alternatives, as well as the promotion of new technologies using substances with low climate impact.

“We must act now to prevent global warming from getting worse. The transition to cleaner technologies is not only beneficial for environmental protection, but it also creates new economic opportunities for our country,” said Arlette Soudan-Nonault.
